What is Google Shopping?
Google Shopping is Google’s paid shopping ads program. Originally launched in 2012, Google Shopping allows retailers to buy advertising space for their products. Google Shopping ads appear near organic search results for a particular product. Google uses user keyword search data to match ads to search queries.
When you search for a product, the images to the top and right of the organic results are paid Product Listing Ads. At the same time, you can also visit a main Google Shopping site and search through product categories that way.
Google Product Feed
One main key to success is what’s called a “product feed.” This is a list of product data which Google uses to associate your items with the correct product groups. Google shopping feed creation involves accurately representing your e-commerce categories and individual product types. If the feed isn’t accurate, then your ads won’t show up in the relevant categories.
Data feeds are sent through the Google Merchant Centre. Product bidding is through the AdWords login.
Google Shopping and Google AdWords
Product Listing Ads are often used along with AdWords, and there are some similarities between the two. With AdWords, you’re paying to be associated with certain keywords your target audience is searching for. With PLA, you’re paying to be associated with certain product categories. In both cases, you’re spending money to show up prominently in the search results.
The Google Shopping Pricing Structure
Unlike with AdWords, the pricing structure for Google Shopping does not centre on keyword bids. Instead, you bid at the product and category level.
The pay model is still Cost Per Click, although there’s no minimum CPC rate. Instead, ranking is based on bids. When you bid higher than your competitor, you’ll (likely) rank higher as well. Ranking is also based on Google’s algorithms for product relevance.
Like AdWords, Google Shopping requires the right balance between visibility and cost. You want to spend enough to show up when people search for your product. At the same time, you can’t spend more than you’re earning back in profits.
Placing Products on Google Shopping
The basics are actually pretty simple. There are four steps:
- Set up a Google Merchant Centre account
- Submit a Product Feed
- Set up a Google AdWords Account (with a Budget)
- Set up a Google Merchant Centre campaign and budget
The Feed is linked to your Merchant Account, which then links to your AdWords account. This is a quick and easy way to drive sales directly to your store.
An AdWords account with a valid budget is necessary for your products to appear on Google Shopping. If the budget drops to zero, your ads and free clicks disappear.
